The Good Ship New York Folk Art Boat Model Tramp Art Paint

Why is so little tramp art painted? I am not sure...the familiar notch-carved cigar box chip constructions would always look better with a little color. That dark, varnished brown hardly livens up a room any...and because of it I have always felt one piece in a room was enough.

Why didn't the makers ever add color?

My boat is almost three feet long, constructed with available pieces of wood and with every color of paint within reach.

  1. I really like your boat. But why are you considering it tramp art and not just folk art? Just wondering.

  2. It shares both the chip carved technique in places and the "make-do" use of cast away scraps of wood. It isn't what is traditionally thought of as "tramp art" but the wonderful colors make me wonder why so much of the traditionally understood tramp art is just ugly brown. When you do find tramp art with original, colorful paint, they are frequently more highly prized...red white and blue frames, etc.
