A Complicated 6 Figure Antique Whirligig Folk Art
An early 20th century piece, but as it had a rotating circle atop the figures and mechanism while it lived outside, the piece is in pretty good condition. Two sawing men and four hammering men work as the gears turn by the wind. It would require a good deal of repair to be put back in working order, but the effort which went into the making is much evident.

Early Folk Art Whirligig Man (or Whirling Arms Toy) Collection Jim Linderman
Early Folk Art Whirligig Man (or Whirling Arms Toy.) Lovely wear and paint on this small spinning arms whirligig or toy. There is an old wire mechanism (seen on reverse) which allows the arms to rotate and move back and forth.

Horse and Rider Whirligig Rust and Galvanized Steel Folk Art
Folk Art Whirligig Surface and Patina
Galvanized steel lasts longer than regular, as the rust on this whirligig readily indicates. Can steel talk? If one listens. The use of two metals has created a curious mixture of surface and patina...but he still rides like the wind.

Old Folk Art Cat (Early Weathervane Fragment Folk Art Cat) Collection Jim Linderman
Wood doesn't last long outside, which is why most weathervanes that remain are metal. This one was made by hand, likely using a pattern from a hobbyist magazine. Traces of the original gray paint remain. Traces of the attached mount remain as well. One can tell if a wooden folk art weathervane is authentic by the age and wear...as there are prevailing winds (and an imperfect balance) the wear should be uneven. I have seen some nearly destroyed on one side, but with plenty of paint and color on the other.

Where the Whirligig Comes From Folk Art Sculpture
The second Vernacular Photograph of sailor whirligigs and others for sale. See HERE for earlier ( and more dramatic) photo documenting a Nantucket Sailor Whirligig Maker. This snapshot likely shows two travelers, circa 1930, who stopped to take pictures near a whirligig maker on the roadside. Familar Whirligig forms include the "Indian in a canoe" and a "Sailor" full bodied whirligig along with an unusual wooden bird in a hoop and a form I do not recognize (whirling!).
