Antique Nantucket Whirligig and Weathervane Late 19th Early 20th Century

Late 19th / Early 20th Century.  You'll see that phrase often describing American folk art Sculpture.  A real photo postcard dated 1914.  Was this fellow in business 14 years earlier?  Probably.  This "Nantucket Merchant" has the standard Sailor whirligig and Whale weathervane, but the art-twirling Bear (second from left) never really took off.  It's up to you if the crow on the right is real or not...cheap printing.  Most of the crows around here won't let you get too close.  (See his competitor below on the back cover of our new book)

Tinsmith Horse Weathervane with Barn Cupola Folk Art

Some documentation here from when Main street had a tinsmith, or maybe down the road a bit.  Barn Cupolas are wonderful, big throwbacks to the family farm.  I don't think those huge chicken factories hidden back behind chain-link fences so you don't go see how they are raised need cupolas.  They need FANS for sure...but our major bird breeding manufacturing processes aren't too concerned with the blowing wind direction...or making the factory stand out.  An indication of their shame, I think.  What they are interested in is hormone fed birds and clipping their beaks so they don't fight.

Old Folk Art Cat (Early Weathervane Fragment Folk Art Cat) Collection Jim Linderman

Wood doesn't last long outside, which is why most weathervanes that remain are metal. This one was made by hand, likely using a pattern from a hobbyist magazine. Traces of the original gray paint remain. Traces of the attached mount remain as well. One can tell if a wooden folk art weathervane is authentic by the age and wear...as there are prevailing winds (and an imperfect balance) the wear should be uneven. I have seen some nearly destroyed on one side, but with plenty of paint and color on the other.
