The Human Living Whirligig

The Human Living Whirligig of Norwich, CT is presented by the Smith Wood Working Co. in 1957.  I checked...the float didn't win first prize.

A Folk Art Whirligig SO FAST it Needs a Spoiler Stabilizer!

This baby is ready for the wind tunnel!  Plus, it has "black and white cookie" wheels to keep it on the road.  All designed like a miniature production model of clay.  Still, this is a big 'un.  Couple feet long!  Also the only "modern" whirligig I've ever had.  I date it to around the introduction of Dodge Chargers, though the profile is a bit chunky by comparison.  Fearful passenger too!

Antique Nantucket Whirligig and Weathervane Late 19th Early 20th Century

Late 19th / Early 20th Century.  You'll see that phrase often describing American folk art Sculpture.  A real photo postcard dated 1914.  Was this fellow in business 14 years earlier?  Probably.  This "Nantucket Merchant" has the standard Sailor whirligig and Whale weathervane, but the art-twirling Bear (second from left) never really took off.  It's up to you if the crow on the right is real or not...cheap printing.  Most of the crows around here won't let you get too close.  (See his competitor below on the back cover of our new book)

Shavings Shop Whirligig Maker and what it Inspired

From a listing on ebay, I found some new information on the whirligig shop shown in this RPPC and which I previously discussed extensively HERE

Turns out it was used as inspiration for a Joseph Lincoln Novel titled SHAVINGS in 1920.

Large Civil War era Antique Folk Art Whirligig Sculpture Collection Jim Linderman

Large Civil War era Antique Folk Art Whirligig Sculpture According to the seller?

"My grandfather lived near Louisville, Kentucky. In 1971 he was visiting a neighbors residence when they were tearing down an old barn that was built around 1890. When they pried up the floorboards, this whirligig was found under the floor. The family who owned the barn said they thought it was possibly used during the civil war. They said troops would build these and put them up around land where the troops were to make it seem like there were more soldiers in the area than there really were. Whether the story is true, who knows."

Regardless, this is one old and gigantic whirligig.  The body (a log once) is over 30 inches.  With the considerable wear, it makes me wonder about the "19th century" whirligigs and how long they stayed outside.  The figure here has virtually no paint left, several staples around the lips which likely held a moustache...and of course one paddle entirely gone.
