Dog with a Basket Tintype Good BOY! Collection Jim Linderman

Looking at this tintype in a flea market, I guessed the dog with a basket in his mouth was a studio prop, but on closer examination, I believe it is a real dog, and a well trained one indeed.  Good BOY Fido!

Thanks to a friendly follower, what I thought was a craftsman toy project from a kit or hobbyist magazine turns out to be a manufactured product made by the Toy Craft company in Wooster, Ohio. See post on Collector's Weekly HERE.  Great paint and wonderful wear.

GOOD DOG! Sit. Staaaaay. GOOD DOG! Dog Photography

Man tries to replicate his best friend in 1940. The pitiful attempt is a 65 pound aluminum Scotty breed named Sparko. Sparko was companion to Elektro, a mechanical man manufactured for the 1940 World's Fair. Pale substitute for the real thing, but then non-allergenic. For a wonderful web museum exhibit of the real thing, see Alan Griffiths show "Nature: Dogs" on Luminous Lint, the premier site for all things Fine Photography. Browse while there...Alan's site is a treasure, and he opens the entire world of photograph collecting.

Dog and Pony Show 1958 Style

Literally, a Dog and Pony show. The expression once referred to acts held outside a carnival or sideshow. It now means to confuse a someone into thinking a product is necessary or improved, to bamboozle the client. There are more advertising executives than carnival acts these days, but both promise more for your money. (Though this young woman probably took more pride in her work than the folks on Madison Avenue) By the way, the term "dog trainer" (as any trainer will tell you) is a complete misnomer. Dog Trainers train dog OWNERS. Dogs are pretty much born knowing what to do.
