Detail from a large (11" x 14") Original Hand-tinted Photograph by Rudolph Rossi circa 1950. Rossi was a member of an informal camera club in New York City where he took photographs of Bettie Page and other amateur models, then meticulously painted each black and white photograph by hand to create the illusion of color photography. Note delicate gold highlights! The recently discovered collection is being exhibited on the site Camera Club Girls. A MATURE SITE. The work is striking and reveals not only the private obsessions of an amateur artist working at a time when risque photographs of this type were taboo, it also offers a rare glimpse into the secret world of interracial models working on the fringe of legality in the repressive 1950s. Additional documentation is shown on the site, including photographs taken at the site where arrests occurred during shooting, a scene depicted in several biographical films about Bettie Page.
