Kopeefun Magic Transfer paper used to copy Cheesecake Images from Comic Books (Gasp!)

For better or worse this is an art blog. I include in that technological advances in the transfer of art like silly putty (press it on the page and it picks up any image) and these KOPEEFUN transfer sheets designed to copy any image by rubbing on the the magic paper on top of any image. Now I don't think the kind folks at Woolworth's intended our little KOPEEFUN consumer to use this paper to copy hot, pre-code comic babes! Maybe the older brother got into the pack? I think this is what the copyright statement means when they say not to be stored "in any retrieval system." If ever there was a retrieval system it was KOPEEFUN. These examples I found carefully preserved in a package from 1941. As you can see, the manufacturer had numerous suggestions for use. Well...I'm just glad our little wicked rubber had "extra sheets" They say the first application of any new technology is to be to fiddle around with the female form. Books, Photography, Film, Video, Digital. They were all used to advance our prurient interests. Witness the Web. Stats vary that 5% to 20% of the entire web is porn. So I guess using the magic paper to save “special” interests isn’t surprising even if she is only a paper doll in comic form. Kopeefun Paper) was produced by Embree manufacturing company in Elizabeth, NJ. in 1941. So I am going to guess these cartoon ladies came from comic books circa 1941-1950 Any comic book scholars out there care to identify the artists or their spicy creations? UPDATE COMIC (AND OVERALL!!! GENIUS DEVLIN THOMPSON CONTRIBUTES THE FOLLOWING: The blonde with the forelock is "Suzie," from the 1945-54 Archie Comics Another image are her fellow Archie-published character Katy Keene. I'm inclined to think the last are from another publisher, and the blonde MAY be as well. On the other hand, Archie's house look before the fifties was a lot less uniform, so it's possible that it's actually Betty Cooper (Bill Ward actually drew a couple of "Betty and Veronica" stories in the forties that looked like this). "Suzie" and "Katy Keene" stories were both featured in PEP COMICS and LAUGH COMICS through the years, so it's possible that those are all from the same comic, but I doubt it. AND For the record, after checking through a box of Archies, Binkys, Scooters and the like that came in at work today, I can tell you that none of these are from Suzie #52, 54, or 57. Also, there are Katy Keene stories in those, as well as Suzie stories drawn by Woggon, so that increases the likelihood that both characters' images are from the same comic. I'd either forgotten or never known how shamelessly cheesecake-oriented Suzie really was. Not that Archie Comics has ever been that shy about the female form, but there are panels of things like a close-up of her gluteus maximus in a short skirt that's riding up that would not appear in an issue of Betty and Veronica, then or now! I'll scan some later, if I get the chance. Thanks Devlin! Raymond "Bud" Overholzer's phantasmic 20th century rustic furniture in Michigan. The Shrine of the Pines

Raymond “Bud” Overholzer created the Shrine of the Pines near Baldwin. A phantasmic furniture collection of pine! Bud was intrigued by misshapen pieces of pine so plentiful near his Michigan property he turned it into the epitome of rustic, eccentric furniture and nicknames. He worked on the collection from 1920 to 1950. It’s all joined by dowels! No nails. All early 20th century furniture should be so well balanced. One of the more intriguing facts is that he invented his own sandpaper out of ground glass. The Shrine is still open! The invention of the Pop Up Ad ?

The invention of the Pop-UP ad. Seriously…how annoying for patrons. I’ve noticed both drudge and google news have both started to make one click through TWO pop-up ads just to read one of the articles they stoled and put on their site. I think I’ll ask google chat AI if they ever heard of the phrase “Killing the Golden Goose” because two Clicks is too much. Comic Artist Jefferson Machamer Shows How to Draw

How to Draw Girls Jefferson Machamer : A funny and talented man, Jefferson Machamer was that rare comic artist who was not only a fine draftsman...he was successful out of the basement! THIS close to be recognized as a REAL artist, he was also a joke writer in Hollywood WAY back, and he authored the strips "Petting Patty" and "Hollywood Husband" during his illustration career. He also worked as a writer on the films "Cute Crime" "Fun's Fun" "Gags and Gals" and the immortal "Koo Koo Korrespondance Skool" in which he played himself...thus satisfying the rigorous "clever use of alliteration" important for all comics. Born 1901 in NYC, he ended up in Hollywood where he passed away in 1960, so the work here should be counted among his last. His most important contribution, other than the slightly perturbed dames like these he "tossed off" (but always took time to pattern their dresses) is his book "Drawing The Female Figure" which shows his generous side...he made it easy for thousands of young kids to learn how to earn at their craft. One page is shown here. A master! Bonus points for his marriage to a hot Hollywood actress who starred in 25 Hollywood B flicks. Strange "Game Board" design on a floor covering from the 1930s

Here is curious fiber / linoleum game board of sorts produced in the 1930s by the Armstrong Cork Company in Pennsylvania. For some reason they called it their “Quaker Rug line” of flooring. It was aimed at children’s rooms, but I have seen images of salvaged pieces found lining walls in sideshow and gaming type locations. It is flexible and bends. The overall size is 18” x 19”. Weird product and weird name, as traditionally Quaker members discouraged gaming type objects and toys. “Quaker’ floor and wall covering c. 1935 collection Jim Linderman / Dull Tool Dim Bulb

The couple who discovered Justin McCarthy Self-Taught Artist

/>
/>
The story of how artists Dorothy and Sterling Strauser came upon Justin McCarthy’s naive art strewn on the lawn at an outdoor market in 1960 is told in numerous books and catalogs. Dorothy (or “Dot” as she preferred) saw them first and went to go get Sterling and share them. In July of that year, a brief article in the Pocono Record announced he would be selling “his fashion drawings” at the Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania Courthouse Outdoor Art Show. Sterling was exhibiting in the same show (his framed and hanging) but it was Dorothy who soughtJustin’s out. She found a kindly gentleman with his paintings tossed on the ground. She went to get Sterling. He, of course, loved them and recalls how much he would enjoy seeing them in frames. McCarthy worked on any available scrap of paper, but to my knowledge never framed a work. He had plenty of time. By the time this splendid couple came across his work, the artist had filled his then run down mansion with 40 years of art. Sterling, who represented and promoted McCarthy’s art for the rest of both of their lives, remembers being allowed to view the work in the mansion two years later, saying the paintings were stacked all over including in the bathtub and the kitchen stove. This was in 1962 . In her dissertation on Justin McCarthy, Nancy Karlins writes “The Strausers were impressed and wanted to buy one of McCarthy’s paintings but they were priced at one hundred dollars each…and he told them he did not think her would sell many pieces of his work so he might as well charge a lot as a little”. Arrangements were made and Sterling Strauser began making the work available to his art world friends and curators. Japanese sketch book 1949 of Exceptional Quallty

I hate to damage this mint sketchbook by scanning, so i was careful. A 1946 inscription is from Lieutenant Fulton in memory of Gladys 1946. Someone this skilled at that particular time probably had to make lots of gifts like this gorgeous booklet. The circumstances are unknown here and I wasn't born then, of course, but the horror and agony of war strikes me when I look at this post-war book. i hope anyone seeing this bows their head and realizes the complete futility of war. 1946 pages from a japanese sketch book, inscribed. Halloween Cooking with Spirits

America goes crazy for Halloween, a day almost as commercial as Christmas. There are clever yard decorations (those homemade) and more horrid ones like foot tall skeletons) from stores. Somehow after seeing 20 or 30 giant skeletons all the same with price tags still on them isn’t very scary. Still, I get Halloween started early in my own creepy way like the rest of them. Today it’s a cooking class celebrating the day cooking with spirits. Vintage photograph Cooking Class with Halloween ingredients, circa 1946 Collection Jim Linderman / Dulll Tool Dim Bulb.

An amazing Miniature Folk Art Environment in the backyard (!) Courtesy Natalie Curley Photography Dealer and writer.

My friend Natalie Curley (who has a nice new book out, more later) found me this amazing backyard miniature circus! 8 x 10 glossy with a “Thompson” logo lower right. I’m kinda slack jawed. Was this a temporary exhibition or permanent? Did they rush the figures into the tents when it rained? There is even a little ticket booth. Natalie Curley is a crackerjack vintage photography dealer who has published a new book exploring the relationship between humans and their pets shown below, like all her collections it’s full of wonderful surprises.
