Antique American Folk Art Sculpture Carving of the Spirit of Communication Golden Boy AT&T Statue
Antique American Folk Art Sculpture Carving of the Spirit of Communication Golden Boy AT&T Statue. An early 20th Century folk art rendering of "Spirit of Communication" also know as Golden Boy. The wood carving is 23 inches tall and mounted (with two screws from behind) on old plywood. Golden Boy was one of the largest sculptures in New York City, second only to the Statue of Liberty in size. Golden Boy was created as the corporate logo for AT&T in 1914. The design was by Evelyn Beatrice Longman. The 24 foot tall gold leaf statue was mounted atop 195 Broadway. For decades, the image became familiar through use on AT&T telephone directories. The statue remained in place until 1984, when it was moved to Madison Avenue, then to Basking Ridge, New Jersey. It is now standing in the lobby of SBC in Dallas, a company which adopted the AT&T name.
This piece could date anywhere from the original 1914 date to the 1930s. At some time (originally?) mounted on a large piece of plywood with screws. This protected the piece for decades. Plywood came into common use around 1930. Interestingly, the sculpture has been criticized for showing the AT&T Titan of Industry tangled in his own wires.
The piece could have been created by a talented hobbyist, maybe commissioned for the organization? Used as a display for outlying branches? It could even be a model involved somehow in production of the actual statue.

African-American Folk Art Sculpture Joe Louis c. 1940 Sewer Tile Clay
Joe Louis, the Brown Bomber folk art sculpture made of clay. Joe was active in the late 1930's to the late 1940's. Born in Alabama and moved to Detroit after being visited by a gang of the Klan. Let's not let that happen again. Best known for his professional record, but also for standing up for civil rights all his life. In 1934, Louis won his first professional title (for which he earned $59.00) and went on to win all 12 of his fights in 1934, ten by knockouts.

African-American Folk Art Sculpture Yard Art in Georgia Hank Aaron Original Photographs by Jim Linderman
I am not disclosing the location of these beautiful cement folk art tributes in a yard in Georgia. As I recall, the artist has been written about some...but these photographs are over 20 years old and I do not know if the work still stands. Hank Aaron, an airplane, a bird. African-American Folk Art Sculpture created as environmental work tends to end up in others hands if it can be moved. I hope this work remains or has found a museum home by now.

Antique Folk Art Statue of Liberty Carved Trade Figure Collection Jim Linderman
Antique Folk Art Statue of Liberty Trade Figure from the turn of the century. The massive sculpture on Liberty Island in Manhattan was installed in 1886. Soon after this 34 inch folk art carving was created. Note construction on the base...several blocks of wood were combined to form a block, and shrinkage of the center piece has been filled at some time with putty or plaster. Found in Pennsylvania.
A tip of the torch to Curley's Antiques who helped in obtaining this work.

Large Civil War era Antique Folk Art Whirligig Sculpture Collection Jim Linderman
Large Civil War era Antique Folk Art Whirligig Sculpture According to the seller?
"My grandfather lived near Louisville, Kentucky. In 1971 he was visiting a neighbors residence when they were tearing down an old barn that was built around 1890. When they pried up the floorboards, this whirligig was found under the floor. The family who owned the barn said they thought it was possibly used during the civil war. They said troops would build these and put them up around land where the troops were to make it seem like there were more soldiers in the area than there really were. Whether the story is true, who knows."
Regardless, this is one old and gigantic whirligig. The body (a log once) is over 30 inches. With the considerable wear, it makes me wonder about the "19th century" whirligigs and how long they stayed outside. The figure here has virtually no paint left, several staples around the lips which likely held a moustache...and of course one paddle entirely gone.
